Matthew 21:6–9
6The disciples went, and did just as Jesus commanded them,
7and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their clothes on them; and he sat on them.
8A very great multitude spread their clothes on the road. Others cut branches from the trees, and spread them on the road.
9The multitudes who went in front of him, and those who followed, kept shouting, “Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
Questions parents ask
What is happening in this Palm Sunday picture?
It shows Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem: He rides a donkey toward the city gate while a joyful crowd carries palm branches and spreads cloaks on the road. It's the event Christians celebrate on Palm Sunday, one week before Easter.
Why did people lay cloaks and branches on the road?
Spreading cloaks and branches in someone's path was how people honored royalty, a way of rolling out a carpet for a king. The Gospels say the crowd did exactly this as Jesus rode by (Matthew 21:8).
Why did Jesus ride a donkey instead of a horse?
A conquering king rode a warhorse; a king coming in peace rode a donkey. Jesus chose the donkey to show His humble, gentle kind of kingship, and to fulfill the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 that the King would come 'lowly, and riding on a donkey.'
When is the best time to use this coloring page?
It's a natural fit for Palm Sunday (the Sunday before Easter) at home or in Sunday school, especially alongside a palm-branch craft. But the story of Jesus the humble King works any week of the year.
