About this scene
Jesus rides the gentle donkey along a cobblestone road, one hand raised in greeting as He approaches the walled city of Jerusalem. The city gate and its towers rise on the left side of the page, and a tall palm tree leans over the road ahead of Him.
The crowd has come out to welcome its King. Children and grown-ups wave palm branches high, and along the road people are spreading their cloaks and laying branches over the stones, just as the Gospels describe the first Palm Sunday. Even the smallest children in the picture are joining the celebration.
A king was expected to arrive on a warhorse, but Jesus came humbly, riding a young donkey, just as the prophet Zechariah had promised long before. The crowds shouted 'Hosanna!' as He passed. It's the moment children re-create every Palm Sunday with their own paper branches. Now they can color it too.

Coloring ideas for this page
- Make the palm branches bright green everywhere you find them: in the crowd's hands, on the tree, and lying on the road.
- Color the donkey a soft grey and give Jesus a white robe with a colored sash.
- Use sandy yellows for the city walls and gate, and warm greys for the cobblestone road.
- Give every cloak on the road a different bold color, like a rainbow carpet for the King.

Why did people lay cloaks and branches on the road?
Spreading cloaks and branches in someone's path was how people honored royalty, a way of rolling out a carpet for a king. The Gospels say the crowd did exactly this as Jesus rode by (Matthew 21:8).
Why did Jesus ride a donkey instead of a horse?
A conquering king rode a warhorse; a king coming in peace rode a donkey. Jesus chose the donkey to show His humble, gentle kind of kingship, and to fulfill the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 that the King would come 'lowly, and riding upon a donkey.'
When is the best time to use this coloring page?
