The story behind this page
God becomes a baby in a manger in Bethlehem. Shepherds hear the news first, and wise men travel far to find Him.
About this scene
Under a thatched stable roof, Mary folds her hands in prayer and Joseph kneels beside her, both gazing down at baby Jesus, who lies swaddled and sleeping in a straw-lined manger. Above the roof peak, the great star shines with long rays, the sign in the sky that marked the newborn King (Matthew 2:2).
The animals crowd in, too: a donkey leans over Joseph's shoulder for a look, and a woolly sheep stands at the front of the stable. A small oil lamp sits on the ground nearby, and behind everything a winding road threads through the hills, a quiet reminder of the long journey Mary and Joseph made to Bethlehem before the baby came (Luke 2:4-7).
It's a busy little scene, which makes it satisfying to color: every family member can claim a part (the star, the roof, the animals) if you're coloring together on a December afternoon.
Coloring ideas for this page
- Make the star above the roof the brightest thing on the page: strong yellow with gold rays reaching outward.
- Use warm browns and tans for the thatched roof and wooden stable posts, and golden yellow for the straw in the manger.
- Mary's veil is traditionally blue, but any gentle color works. Give Joseph's cloak a deep contrasting shade.
- Leave the sheep's wool white and color all around it, then try a soft gray-brown for the donkey peeking in.
What this page teaches
God's Son was not born in a palace. Mary wrapped Him in cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room at the inn (Luke 2:7). The first Christmas teaches children that God keeps His promises. Jesus came humbly, for everyone.

Is this coloring page just for Christmas?
Christmas is when most families print it, but the birth of Jesus is a year-round story. It also pairs well with an Advent countdown: color one section per day as you read through Luke 2 together.
Can our church print this for the children's Christmas program?
Yes. Print as many copies as your class or program needs. It works well as a keep-them-busy activity during rehearsal waits, or as a take-home after a Luke 2 lesson.
What should I tell my child about the star?
The Bible says a star announced Jesus' birth and later guided the wise men to Him (Matthew 2:1-10). On this page it shines right above the stable roof, a good prompt to talk about how God led people to find Jesus.
My toddler wants to help. Is this too detailed?
The big shapes (the roof, the star, the animals) are toddler-friendly, while faces and small details suit older siblings. Many families split the page: little ones take the sheep and donkey, big kids take Mary, Joseph, and the baby.
