About this scene
The center of the picture is the tomb itself, carved into the hillside rock — and its doorway stands wide open, with rays of light bursting from inside. The huge round stone that once sealed it has been rolled off to the side, exactly as the women discovered on the first Easter morning (Matthew 28:2). The tomb is empty because Jesus is not there — He has risen.
Everything around the tomb is waking up. The sun rises over the hills on the left, two little birds perch on leafy branches, and a small round tree stands by the path. The foreground is crowded with spring flowers — tulips, daisies, and tall lilies — as if the whole hillside is celebrating.
Because the scene is all light, birds, and flowers, it's a gentle way to give young children the good news of Easter without anything frightening. The empty doorway does the storytelling.
Coloring ideas for this page
- Color the rays coming from the tomb doorway in pale yellows and golds, so the light really looks like it's spilling out.
