On the first Palm Sunday, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey as crowds of people waved palm branches and cheered. It was the beginning of the most important week in the Bible.
Retold by Hannah Whitford · New Testament Story · Updated May 2026
For young children, Palm Sunday is a celebration story. People were so happy to see Jesus that they waved branches and spread their cloaks on the road. But the way Jesus arrived — humbly, on a donkey — tells children something important about the kind of king He is.
Jesus asked two of His disciples to go ahead and bring Him a young donkey that had never been ridden. It might have seemed like an unusual request — but it was part of something that had been promised long before in the scriptures.
Kings in those days often arrived on powerful warhorses. But Jesus chose a donkey — a symbol of peace and humility. He was showing people what kind of king He truly was.
As Jesus rode toward Jerusalem, the crowd grew excited. People spread their cloaks on the road like a royal carpet. Others cut palm branches and waved them, shouting 'Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!' The whole city was buzzing with excitement.
This celebration was the beginning of the most important week in history. Jesus knew what was coming — but He rode forward anyway, full of love for the people He came to save.
Dear God, thank You that Jesus is a humble and loving king. Help us welcome Him into our hearts the way the crowd welcomed Him into Jerusalem. Hosanna! Amen.
Palm Sunday teaches children that Jesus is a king unlike any other — He came not with power and force, but with humility and love. He rode into Jerusalem knowing what it would cost Him, because He loved people that much.
