We read the passages behind the stories in this book and note where a retelling compresses, paraphrases or adds. We compare editions and read what other parents report. We have not tested this book with a classroom.
Noah, Genesis 6 to 9
The passage begins with why the flood came and ends with a covenant. Twenty-four pages keep the ark, the animals, the dove and the rainbow, and leave the judgment and the deaths outside the frame.
Added detail
The animals' behaviour on the ark, and much of the warmth in the pictures, is the illustrator's invention. Nothing contradicts the account; a good deal is simply not in it.
Golden Books and Christianbook both list it for ages 2 to 6. It is 24 pages of large, bold pictures with a few lines of text each, so a two-year-old can follow it and a six-year-old can read it aloud to a younger sibling. It is the shortest and usually the least expensive book on this shelf.
Three or four minutes. Barbara Shook Hazen's retelling is a single sitting with no chapters, which makes it a good last book of the night. Children who love it will ask for it every night for a month, which is an argument for the hardcover rather than a thin paperback copy.
The hard parts. Genesis 6 to 9 includes the reason for the flood and the death of everything outside the ark. A 24-page Little Golden Book gives you the animals, the rain, the dove and the rainbow. There is no Scripture text and no reference printed. For a preschooler that is usually the right call, but it is a call.
No. It is one Bible story told by a children's author inside a long-running picture-book series, with no verses printed and no other stories included. If you want a Noah's Ark your child can grow into, a storybook Bible will carry the same events with more of the context around them.
It is the cheapest way to put one story in a child's hands, and the artwork is the classic Golden Book look rather than anything contemporary. The Beginner's Bible tells Noah in a similar register but sets him inside ninety other stories. Buy this one for a gift bag or a first shelf, not as the only Bible book in the house.
