What age is My First Bible Board Book for?
DK's listing gives a reading age of 2 to 3. It is a small board book, roughly 4.75 by 5.75 inches across 36 pages, sized for a child to hold rather than for an adult to read across a room. Babies under one will chew the corners, which board pages survive and paper ones do not.
What is inside?
Familiar Bible stories told in a few words a page with bright, clear pictures, published by DK Children in 2005. At 36 small pages there is no room for plot, so each story is one scene and a sentence. It works as a naming book about the people of the Bible more than as a book of stories.
How long does a reading take?
A minute or two, and toddlers usually want to go back and forth rather than straight through. That is normal at this age. Families tend to keep it in the bag or the car rather than on the bedtime shelf, because it is small enough to carry and sturdy enough to survive being carried.
What does it leave out?
Nearly all of the Bible, on purpose. A 36-page board book for two-year-olds cannot carry a storyline, so there is no arc, no Scripture text and no chapter-and-verse references. It introduces the names and the pictures. The story itself comes later, from a full storybook Bible.
Baby's First Bible Stories or this one?
They do the same job at slightly different weights. Baby's First Bible Stories is a padded board book of twelve stories with a Scripture reference printed beside each one for the adult. This DK book is smaller and lighter with more pages and fewer words. For a first birthday either works; for a nursery shelf the padded cover lasts longer.
