The Lost Sheep is one of Jesus' most beloved parables. It teaches children that God never gives up on anyone — and that every single person matters deeply to Him.
Retold by Hannah Whitford · God's Love for Everyone · Updated May 2026
This parable is perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary kids because the image of a shepherd searching for one lost sheep is easy to picture and emotionally clear. Families can talk about what it means to be found, loved, and valued.
A shepherd had 100 sheep. He knew every single one. One day, he counted his sheep: 97, 98, 99. He counted again. Still 99. One little sheep was missing.
The shepherd did not say, 'I still have 99 — that is enough.' He left the 99 sheep safe together and went to search for the one that was lost. He looked behind rocks, in the hills, and through the valley.
Finally, he found the little lost sheep. It was scared and tired. The shepherd picked it up gently and put it on his shoulders. He carried it all the way home.
When he got home, he called his friends and neighbors. 'Come celebrate with me — I found my lost sheep!' Jesus said that is how God feels about every person. You are never too lost for God to find you.
Dear God, thank You for never giving up on me. Help me remember that even when I feel lost or alone, You are already looking for me. Amen.
The Lost Sheep teaches children that God searches for every person who feels lost or alone. No one is too far away, too small, or too forgotten for God to find and carry home.
