The 10 Lepers Bible Story for Kids
The story of the 10 lepers is a short, powerful account from Luke 17 where Jesus heals ten men — but only one comes back to say thank you. It teaches children one of the simplest and deepest lessons in the Gospels: gratitude matters.
This story is ideal for preschoolers through early elementary because it is brief, emotionally clear, and opens a natural conversation about saying thank you — something every child is already learning. The contrast between ten people healed and only one who returned makes the point unforgettable.
Read the Story
Ten men who needed help
As Jesus was walking toward Jerusalem, ten men called out to him from a distance. They had a skin disease called leprosy that made them have to stay far away from other people. They called out, 'Jesus, please help us!'
Jesus heals them all
Jesus told all ten men to go show themselves to the priests — the religious leaders who could declare them well. As they went, something remarkable happened: all ten were healed. Their skin became completely clean and healthy.
Only one came back
When one of the men saw that he was healed, he turned around. He came back to Jesus, praising God with a loud voice. He fell at Jesus' feet and said thank you. That man was the only one who returned — and Luke 17:16 tells us he was a Samaritan, a foreigner that others often looked down on. The outsider was the one who gave thanks.
Jesus notices gratitude
Jesus asked where the other nine were. 'Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?' he said (Luke 17:18). Then he told the man: 'Your faith has made you well.' Jesus noticed both the gratitude and the person everyone else overlooked.
Why kids love this story
- •The number ten makes the story easy to count and remember — and the contrast of one vs. nine makes the point land immediately.
- •Children already know what it feels like to forget to say thank you, and they recognize that feeling in this story.
- •The healing is dramatic and joyful — children connect with the picture of ten people suddenly made well.
- •It opens a simple, honest conversation: 'Why do you think the other nine didn't come back?'
Key lesson
The ten lepers story teaches children that gratitude is a choice — and that noticing what God has done and saying thank you is an act of faith. Jesus noticed the one who returned. He notices our thankfulness too.
A short prayer
Dear God, thank You for all the good things You give us. Help us remember to come back and say thank you, like the one man did. Amen.

What is the lesson of the 10 lepers story for kids?
The main lesson is that gratitude is important and that Jesus notices when we say thank you. Ten men were healed, but only one came back to express thanks — and Jesus acknowledged that act of gratitude specifically.
Where is the story of the 10 lepers in the Bible?
The story of the ten lepers is found in Luke 17:11-19. It is a short passage of just nine verses, making it easy to read aloud with children in just a few minutes.

For young children, leprosy can be explained as a skin sickness that made people have to stay away from others and live alone. The healing meant they could be with their families and community again — which helps children understand why it was such a joyful moment.
