Jonah and the whale is one of the most memorable Old Testament stories for children. It teaches that God gives second chances — and that running from God only delays what He has planned.
Retold by Hannah Whitford · Obedience and Second Chances · Updated May 2026
This story works well for preschoolers through early elementary because it is dramatic, vivid, and easy to understand. The whale, the storm, and the big rescue make it impossible to forget. Families can use it to talk honestly about what happens when we run from hard things God asks us to do.
God told Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh and warn the people there to stop doing wrong things. But Jonah did not want to go. Instead of obeying, he got on a boat going the opposite direction.
God sent a great storm. The waves crashed and the boat rocked violently. The sailors were terrified. Jonah knew the storm was because of him. 'Throw me into the sea,' he told them. 'Then the storm will stop.' And it did.
But Jonah did not sink to the bottom. God sent a great fish to swallow him whole. Jonah sat inside the fish for three whole days. In the dark, he prayed. He said, 'Thank You, God, for not letting me drown. I will do what You ask.' Even there, in the most unlikely place, Jonah found God — and trusted Him.
The fish spit Jonah out onto the beach. This time, Jonah got up and went to Nineveh. He told the people there that God wanted them to stop doing wrong things. And something amazing happened — the people listened. They said sorry and changed their ways. God showed mercy to the whole city. He really is a God of second chances.
Dear God, when You ask me to do something hard, help me trust You instead of running away. Thank You for giving second chances like You gave Jonah. Amen.
Jonah and the whale teaches children that when God asks us to do something hard, running away does not work — but God is always ready to give us another chance. Even when we make the wrong choice, God's grace and patience are bigger than our mistakes.
Hand-picked, read with a child on the lap.
