David and Jonathan is one of the most moving friendship stories in all of Scripture. It shows children what it looks like to be a truly loyal friend — someone who puts the other person's good before their own.
Retold by Hannah Whitford · True Friendship · Updated May 2026
This story works especially well for early elementary children who are beginning to navigate friendships, loyalty, and what it means to care about someone else's wellbeing. The friendship between David and Jonathan is striking because Jonathan had every reason to be jealous of David — but he chose loyalty instead.
After David defeated Goliath, he was brought before King Saul — and Jonathan, Saul's son, was there. Something remarkable happened: Jonathan immediately loved David as a friend. He gave David his own robe and weapons as a sign of their bond.
As David's popularity grew, Saul became jealous and wanted to hurt David. Jonathan knew his father was wrong. Even though standing up for David meant disagreeing with his own father the king, Jonathan warned David of the danger and helped him escape to safety. He chose his friend even when it was hard.
Jonathan and David made a special promise to each other — a covenant — that their friendship would last and that they would look out for each other's families forever. This promise meant more to both of them than being safe, popular, or comfortable.
Even years later, after Jonathan was gone, David never forgot his promise. He found Jonathan's son Mephibosheth and brought him to live at the royal palace — giving him a place at the king's table every day for the rest of his life. That is what a promise-keeping friend looks like.
Dear God, thank You for giving us friends. Help us be the kind of friend David and Jonathan were to each other — loyal, honest, and brave enough to do what is right. Amen.
David and Jonathan teaches children that the best friendships are built on loyalty, honesty, and choosing the other person's good — even when it is hard. True friendship is a gift worth protecting.
