Abraham's story is one of the great faith stories in the Bible. God called Abraham to leave everything he knew, made him a remarkable promise, and Abraham trusted God even when it seemed impossible.
Retold by Hannah Whitford · Genesis 12–21 · Updated July 2026
For children, Abraham's story is best told as a story about trust. Abraham could not see how God's promises would come true, but he kept following anyway. It helps children understand that faith means trusting God even when we don't understand everything, and that God always keeps His word.
“I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing.”
Genesis 12:2
“The LORD brought him outside, and said, ‘Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’ He said to Abram, ‘So will your offspring be.’”
Genesis 15:5
“Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.”
Genesis 21:2

The main lesson is that faith means trusting God even when things seem impossible or uncertain. Abraham did not always understand God's plan, but he kept trusting, and God kept every promise He made.
Questions to ask after you read together. No right answers, just good conversation.
God asked Abraham to leave everything he knew. Do you think you could do that? What would be hardest?
God promised Abraham descendants as many as the stars. Have you ever counted stars? What does that kind of number feel like?
Abraham trusted God even when the promise seemed impossible. What helps you trust when things seem impossible?
What's one promise you believe God has made that you're still waiting on?
On black construction paper, let your child make stars with white chalk dots, hole-punched foil, or star stickers. The only rule is: too many to count. Then try counting them together and happily fail. Write the promise along the bottom: “So will your offspring be.” Now it hangs on the wall where the waiting happens.
Abraham lived in tents his whole traveling life, so build one: a blanket over two chairs, a flashlight inside. Climb in and tell the story from inside the tent, then poke your heads out to look toward the sky the way Abraham did. Zero craft supplies, maximum memory.
